Chase takes my hand and lifts me off the ground.
I’m still feeling woozy, and it has nothing to do with the fall.
It’s all about the kiss.
A kiss he gave me not out of pity. Not out of drunkenness.
This one, he wanted.
And god, I wanted it too. So much.
As he sets me down on both feet, pain slices up to my knee.
“Ow,” I groan, lurching over.
“What’s the problem?” But he’s already on his knees in front of me.
I point to my ankle. “I think I might have broken or sprained something.”
“Can you walk? Come on,” he says, taking Fortune’s reins and giving me his arm to hold onto as he leads me down the hill. I hobble a little, my ankle throbbing with every step. The snow is falling harder now, blowing in drifts, little icy drops pelting my face.
In the distance, I can just make out the dark outline of one of the old outposts for hunters. I know Chase and Miles used to take girls there, because I used to spy on them sometimes while they lit fires on summer nights and passed around weed. Sometimes, I would listen to Chase when he was with a girl, hear him talking low and sexy to her, whispering words to make her swoon. I’d peek in and watch as he stripped her down in the darkness and mounted her, listen as she moaned in pleasure. Afterward, I’d look in and see the lit orange tip of his cigarette, the moonlight bouncing off his lean, teenage chest.
He was so damn cool, it killed me. He never fumbled, never did anything awkward. Whenever I’d sit out there in the grass, snooping on him, I’d always imagined being one of his girls, having him on top of me, touching me, whispering those words to me, his breath tickling my ear.
And now…it’s like a dream, about to come true. Me, alone, with Chase.
Nothing’s like I imagined it. The snow is falling like a white sheet. It’s so cold I can’t even feel the hand he’s holding because I forgot to wear gloves. The shelter’s even older and draftier than before, likely. My ankle’s probably sprained.
But the guy? He’s remarkably the same. And so, I’m game.
“We’re going over there? But what about Kricket?” I ask, hopping through snow that’s already up to my ankles.
“She’s all right. She knows these hills better than we do, and she doesn’t want to be outside. She’ll find her way back to the stable.” He tugs my hand. “Let’s get ourselves shelter before it gets bad and we can’t see anything.”
I already can barely see my hand in front of my face. The wind whips so hard that my face stings. I let out a cry and lift my hands to shield my face and eyes.
Not only that, my toes? The ones that are bare because of my boots?
They’re so frozen, I can’t feel them anymore.
“This is awful. We never get storms like this!”
He wraps an arm around me, and I bury my face against his warm chest.
